During the 1990s, there was a particular type of car know as the ‘rep-mobile’. They were family cars which were often driven by businessmen and sales representatives – four doors, five seats and a mid sized engine. Every major manufacturer, from Ford to Volvo had one in their range and they could be seen pounding the motorways of every major European country. However, very few people would have described them as exciting. But as soon as they hit the track, everything changed.

The British Touring Car championship had been around since late 50s, but really hit it’s stride in the 90s with the introduction of the Super Touring class of saloon car. Whilst the cars still looked almost identical to their showroom counterparts (although with some brightly coloured paint jobs), and running a highly tuned 2 litre engine, the cars were stripped down and light weight. The cars sat very low to the ground and to accommodate the big racing wheels there was very little clearance under the wheel arches. This gave the cars and aggressive, racey look which was mirrored by the bumper to bumper on track action.

Drivers from around the world flocked to the series, attracted by the close racing and exciting tracks. The racing, whilst officially non contact, allowed some push and shove due to the solid nature of the cars, and the crowds loved the physical aspects of the competition. As the series became more competitive, the costs increased. When Vauxhall first entered the class with it’s Cavalier, it cost £60,000 to build the car. By the time the Vectra was competing, the technology had become more advanced and the cars cost over £250,000, forcing many teams out due to budget limitations. It was ultimately replaced with a much cheaper formula.

The Vectra in the colouring page ran from 1997 to 2000 and was prepared by the world famous Triple Eight racing team. At the hands of drivers including Derek Warick, Jason Plato and Yvan Muller. However, for most BTCC fans the most famous Vauxhall driver is John Cleland, a Scottish race ace who took his Cavalier to the ’95 drivers championship and notched up many great results in this Vectra.

Some race series exist to pit drivers in similar or identical cars up against each other. And some exist to allow drivers to race a wide variety of machinery. GT3 is one such class – bumper grids of high performance sports cars from manufacturers such as Audi, Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini and BMW as well as American muscle from Ford, Corvette and Dodge lined up against each other in sprint and endurance races around the world.

GT3 was created as an affordable series to allow drivers to compete in many different races rather than developing a costly race car that could only be entered in to events with that particular set of rules. Once the car has been approved by the FIA (the organisation that runs most global motorsport) then the car is automatically eligible for races around the world. Once the cars are ready to race, the performance is altered by the organisers to try and get the huge variety of cars taking part to perform at the same level, leading to some close intense racing

Like a lot of GT cars, the natural home of a GT3 is the world of endurance racing, where drivers, teams and machinery put them selves to the test battling it out for 24 hours round some of the worlds most famous race tracks, most noteably the Spa 24 Hours is Belgium and the 24 Hours of the Nurburgring in Germany. In recent years, the BMW Z4 has been a very successful GT3 car and teams such as Marc VDS and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing have achieved great success in Europe and America. You can download both of their liveries below, or have a go at creating your own GT3 car

It’s not uncommon for a car to be named after the founder of the company – Porsche, Ferrari, Rolls Royce, Lamborghini…. the list goes on and on. But what do you do if you’re setting up a small sports car company and your name less, ahem, glamorous? Well in the case of Trevor Wilkinson you drop a few letters from your first name and set up TVR.

Starting in a humble workshop in Blackpool in 1947, TVR began as a simple engineering outfit before progressing to building one of track specials and eventually small run sports cars. Fast forward 50 odd years and the company has had a turbulent time, being sold several times and suffering endless financial problems. However, it has also produced some incredible and well loved British sports cars, including the Griffith, Cerbera and the subject of our newest colouring page, the Tuscan. Produced between 1999 and 2006 the Tuscan was a jaw dropping car offering a sub 4 second 0-60 time and some cool paint that changed colour depending on how the light hit it. The Tuscan T400R was later build by TVR to go racing and the already quick machine was upgraded to include a 400bhp 4 litre 6 cylinder engine.

The car would race at Le Mans in 2003 although unfortunately both cars would fail to finish. When they returned in 2004, both of the companies cars made it the full 24 hour distance and finished a respectable position in class, repeating their success with a solo car in 2005. Despite being nearly 10 years old, the Tuscan still looks bang up to date and is a welcome sight at any race track. You can download either the 2004 or 2005 Le Mans contesting cars, or download the blank template and create your own livery

Rallying is a world where the modest road car can be elevated to the status of fire spitting icon – the Peugeot 205, Audi Quattro and Renault 5 are 3 such legendary machines. In the UK, Vauxhall (or Opel as it’s known in the rest of Europe) doesn’t have a particularly high profile racing pedigree apart from in the world of Touring Car racing. However, one car that has earned it’s place as a fan favorite is the Opel Manta B 400.

Built to Group B specifications, although running a rear wheel drive configuration against the increase dominance of the 4 wheel drive system, the car packed 275BHP and had specially lightened Kevlar body panels. Piloted by British aces Jimmy McRae (father of Colin) and Russell Brookes, the two evenly matched drivers battled it out for two season as team mates. Still a common site on historic rally events and showcases like the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Manta draws large crowds in it’s iconic Andrew’s Heat For Hire colour scheme.

This Sunday marks the first round of the BTCC, the door banging, bumper to bumper saloon car racing series. This year there are a bumper 31 drivers running 14 different car models across the 30 round championship. Here at Racing Colour we’ve produced an infographic showing the varied types of car, from estates to nimble hatch backs that will be pounding round some of Britain’s best race tracks.

And if you fancy getting creative, you can also draw your own liveries for each of the cars competing. Why not take them to the races with you and get them signed by the drivers?

In this year’s World Endurance Championship, the top level of sports car racing, there will be 3 giant car manufacturers battling it out at the front of the field – Porsche, Audi and Toyota. All 3 have a long history with the sport, with Audi dominating the series in recent years with multiple Le Mans wins. Toyota built and raced many different cars during the sports Group C era, but when the rules changed in 1995 it found itself needing to come up with a new track machine and for several years raced modified road cars in the GT classes. By the time the 98 season rolled around they were ready with their futuristic GT-One (also known as the TS020). Technically the rules required that to compete in the GT class, the car had to be adapted from an existing road car on sale to customers. Along with Porsche and Mercedes who were competing in the same class at the time, Toyota realised they could make a very very small run of ‘road going’ versions of the car which were completely stripped out and were essentially race machines with a number plate screwed on to the front. They were certainly not the type of car you could drive to the shops

During the testing for Le Mans, Toyota brought out 3 GT-Ones, and quickly set times of 2nd, 5th and 10th overall, beating many of the custom prototype cars which were supposed to be the faster class. Unfortunately, the race didn’t go their way, losing two cars to an accident and a gear box failure with only one car struggling home to 9th place, some 25 laps behind it’s Porsche rival. For the 1999 race, the organisers felt that these new GT cars bent the rules too far and forced the designers to make changes. Toyota, along with Mercedes, upgraded their cars to full GT Prototype specs. As the Toyota was so far removed from a road car already, the car didn’t require many changes and the car was quick from the off, locking out the front row of the grid in qualifying.

Unfortunately, whilst the cars fought for the lead throughout the 24 hour race, all of them suffered tire problems, with the last remaining GT-One suffering a blow out whilst battling for the lead in the last hour, forcing it to pit and ultimately finish second. After the race, Toyota turned it’s attentions to their new F1 team, and didn’t race at Le Mans until 2012 when it brought it’s new Prototype car TS030 Hybrid to do battle with Audi.

You can download both the 1998 and 1999 cars with their bold red and white liveries, classic Toyota Racing colours, or you can try your hand at creating your own Le Mans livery on the blank template. This is one of my favorite ever race cars so I hope you enjoy it too!

It takes a special kind of driver to win a world championship. It takes a very special kind of a driver to win multiple world championships. And whilst debate might rage about who the greatest touring car or Formula 1 driver might be, it is hard to disagree about who is the greatest modern rally driver. Sebastien Loeb has not only won the World Rally Championship a record 9 times (and not only that, but in an unbroken run), but holds the record for most event wins, most podium places and most points scored. So pretty much everything then. (Oh, and don’t forget 3 wins at the Race Of Champions, winning the X-Games Rally Cross event in his first attempt, 2 French Sportsman of the Year awards, and a 2nd place at the Le Mans 24 Hours)

Loeb retried fully from rallying in 2013, and his final car was this, the Citroen DS3 WRC. Based on Citroen’s small family hatchback, the WRC spec DS3 manages to produce 300 bhp from it’s tiny 1.6 litre engine thanks to a turbo charger. This is driven through all four of the cars wheels to put the power down on the huge variety of surfaces the drivers encounter in a typical rally event. These cars have to be able to cope equally well on snow, ice, tarmac, gravel, mud and sand, so are built to be tough. Modern WRC cars are not as fast as some that have gone before them, but they are still able to hit 60mph in under 4 seconds go on to a top speed of 150mph. Usually whilst going sideways!

Loeb has had several liveries on his DS3, and the colouring page is based on the car he drove for his final season in the WRC, but if you fancy creating one of his other designs, there is also the blank template for you to get stuck in to

Unless you are very lucky, the car sat outside your house is not likely to be a 500bhp, fire spitting, wheels spinning monster. Very few people get the chance to sit behind the wheel of a Ferrari, Porsche or McLaren. And great though it is to watch those incredible machines stomping across race tracks around the world, it can be difficult to put yourself in the drivers shoes.

Which might explain why Touring Car racing is so popular. Family saloons and hatch backs, visually identical to the cars seen in supermarket car parks everywhere, battle it out wheel to wheel on Sunday afternoons around the world. There are many different varieties of touring car racing, from the V8 Supercars of Australia to the super lightweight space framed Brazilian Stock Car Championship, but arguably one of the most famous is the British Touring Car Championship.

Here grids of 25+ cars from manufacturers such as Audi, Ford, BMW, Vauxhall, Toyota and VW compete in short sprint races where the action is fast and aggressive with cars frequently losing bumpers, wing mirrors and even doors whilst trying to gain the edge over their evenly matched competition. The drivers are well known and their characters are played up meaning there are some great rivalries on track. One of the most successful cars in recent years of the BTCC has been the Honda Civic, winning the championship in 2011,2012 and 2013 at the hands of Matt Neal, Gordon Shedden and most recently Andrew Jordan. The car has a 300bhp tuned 2 litre engine a complete car costs about £200,000 to build, which makes it one of the most accessible forms of top tier motorsport.

You can download Andrew Jordan’s 2013 championship winning Pirtek Racing Civic and Matt Neal’s 2012 title holding Yuasa sponsored car. And if you are feeling creative, you can download the blank template and come up with a design you’d like to see winning the 2014 championship.

Formula 1 and Indycar might appear very similar on the surface, but in reality, the cars are very different. It takes a special driver to be able to compete at the top level in both. Once such driver was British legend, Nigel Mansell. Mansell is the most successful British driver of all time, with 31 GP wins to his name. In 1992, this car, the Williams FW14B took him to championship glory, winning the Formula 1 drivers title. In 1993, he traveled across to America and won the CART (Indycar) championship in his rookie year, the first person to do so. And he did all of this whilst sporting his trademark flat cap and mustache…

The car was designed by aerodynamic genius Adrian Newey, coming from the cash strapped March team. With Williams massive financial and technical resources at his disposal, he was able to create a world beating race car. Packing a 3.5 litre V10 Renault engine, the car was incredibly advanced for it’s time, featuring active suspension, a semi automatic gearbox, traction control and (until it was banned) anti-lock breaks. During it’s time on track, the FW14B notched up 17 grands prix, 21 pole positions and 289 points before being retired. Due to recent restrictions on the technology permitted in modern F1 cars, the Williams remains one of the most advanced Formula 1 cars ever built.

The Japanese have built some pretty legendary cars – the Subaru Impreza, Honda NSX, Mitsubishi Evo, Datsun 270z and the Toyota AE86. However, if there was one car that has become associated with high speed Japanese metal, it’s the Nissan Skyline GT-R. Pick up the controller for any racing video game and you’ll find some kind of Skyline to drive, and there is has been at least one version in every action packed Fast And The Furious film. For a car that has it’s roots in a humble 4 door saloon, the Skyline GT-R has become both globally famous and infamous.

Over time the Skyline GT-R has become more and more powerful and added bulging body panels to suit. The version launched in 2007 saw it shaking off it’s Skyline name and shortening becoming the GT-R, packing in a 3.8 litre, V6 engine pushing power through all four of it’s wheels. All this adds up to a car that can do 193 mph and hit 60 in just 3.2 seconds. Which might explain why some magazines have nicknamed the car ‘Godzilla’!

Unsurprisingly, there have been a few racing version of the GT-R, with the car competing in the Japanese Super GT series as well as GT racing championships around the world, notching up a string of wins in the process. This week’s colouring page is the FIA GT1 version, and there are three liveries for you to tackle, the JRM version, a Sumopower edition and the GT Academy paint scheme, which was featured on the car driven by winners of a competition run by Nissan and Sony to find a gamer who would be good enough to compete with professional racing drivers.
